ROBBINSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to promote physical growth and development through various health and physical education activities. Students will be exposed to rules, terminology, equipment, and safety issues of each sport or game covered. The skills and knowledge acquired will be an asset in future leisure and lifetime sports activities. Health lessons will be implemented into weekly schedules and students will be required to complete all assignments. Physical Education is a participation-based class, in which all students have an opportunity to excel. All students must participate in class in order to receive a passing grade. The physical fitness components will be discussed, in detail, and practiced to help students make a smooth transition from physical education class to a physically active lifestyle. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Be dressed out, standing in line, ready for class to begin no later than 3 minutes after the tardy bell rings. DO NOT BE LATE!!! If you are not in your assigned "spot" when the 3 minutes are up, you will be considered tardy. 2. Only doctor's excuses and obvious physical reasons will be accepted. Notes from parents are not acceptable. 3. Be prepared for both activities in the gym and in the classroom. When health is assigned, paper and pen/pencil should be brought to class. Our textbooks will stay in the classroom. 4. Participate every day. 5. Demonstrate a positive attitude and good sportsmanship at all times. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of the activities on a written test at the end of various units. 7. Demonstrate the ability to perform basic skills at the end of various units by performing a skills test. 8. Demonstrate a minimum level of fitness on various physical fitness tests.
GRADES Grades will be based on a combination of the following: 1. Participation, Attitude and Dressing Out - 50% 2. All Tests - 25% 3. Class work and Homework Assignments (Health and PE) - 25% 4. Final Exam - 25% of Final Grade
****Dressing out for PE is a must. Not dressing out will result in ISS and failure of the course. Students are not allowed to sit-out of PE. You will not be allowed any free sit outs. A sit out will result in 5 points off your participation grade and as noted above, participation is 50% of your grade. You are responsible for being properly dresses out and ready for class. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.
CLASS RULES 1. Only tennis shoes are allowed on the gym floor. No street shoes are allowed.
2. No food or drinks are allowed in the gym.
3. Students will be given a sit-out if they are not properly dressed out. This means shorts or warm-up pants, t-shirt and tennis shoes. During cold weather, a long-sleeve shirt or sweatshirt and long sweatpants will be required if class is held outside. Refer to your student handbook for RHS dress code (page 20). No tank tops or short shorts are allowed. Absolutely no sophie shorts.
4. No school personnel are responsible for lost or stolen property.
5. Do not return to the locker room at any time during class without permission.
6. Please report any physical limitations that you have to the PE teacher.
7. Please report any injury at the time the injury occurs.
8. Be prompt and on time for class. Be dressed out and ready to begin 3 minutes after the tardy bell rings.
9. For those that take sit-outs, a written assignment will be required.
10. The use of profanity and obscene gestures will not be tolerated. Respect yourself, your classmates and your teacher. There will be no warnings for these offenses.
11. No cell phones or I-Pods are allowed during class. Refer to the RHS student handbook (page 14) for the rule and discipline procedure.
