Graham County Schools Flu Plan 2010-2011

Help Fight the Flu!

Graham County Schools is taking a proactive approach to help prevent the spread of seasonal and H1Na flu.The following school plan as recommended by the CDC has been put in place for staff and students. We need your support in making this prevention program successful.

1.  Stay home when sick:  Those with flu-like illness should stay home for a least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.  They should stay home even if they are using antiviral dru gs.  (For more information, visit http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/exclusions.htm.)

2.  Separate ill students and staff:  Students and staff who appear to have flu-like illness should be sent to a room separate from others until they can be sent home.

3.  Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquitte: Wash hands frequently with soap and water when possible, and cover noses and mouths with tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).  Hand sanitizer will be provided at each school cafeteria for students, staff, and visitors use before going through lunch line.)

4.  Routine cleaning: School staff should routinely clean areas that students and staff touch often with the cleaner they typically use.

5.  Early treatment of high-risk students and staff:  People at high risk for influenza complicationswho become ill with influenza-like illness should speak with their care provider as soon as possible.  Early treatment with antiviral medications is very important for people at high risk because it can prevent hospitalizations and death.  People at high risk include those who are pregnant, have asthma or diabetes, have compromised immune systems, or have neuromuscular diseases.

Help prevent the spread of influenza.  Get you seasonal and H1N1 shots.  Visit the local Health Department for more information or call them at 828-479-7900.
