GEAR UP NC's purpose is to increase the number of students who attend public and private or independent colleges and universities, community colleges, or technical schools immediately after high school.

To accomplish this goal, GEAR UP NC works with students and families to develop the skills students need to go to college through:

• Early intervention by tutoring and mentoring
• Early parental involvement in career and educational planning
• Academically challenging courses in middle and high schools
• Early awareness of scholarship opportunities, student loans, and other financial information
